Writing
September 18, 2011
Recently, the English students were given a business letter of complaint to write. They must think of a problem that they have had in a business such as a wrong order, a broken product, or poor customer service. They must describe the incident and then recommend a solution. They need to follow the block letter format when typing their final draft.
As with most formal essays/paper projects, students are giving up to two weeks to complete the paper. I allow students to turn work in early for a grade. I return the papers usually within 48 hours. If the student is happy with their grade, they are finished. If they wish to take my recommendations (red ink) and rewrite the paper, they may submit the new copy for a new grade. They may resubmit the paper as many times as they wish up until two days before the due date. In this way, students are able to use the feedback I give them to improve their writing.
Writing is an essential skill that incorporates almost everything we do in class: critical thinking, organization, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc. Students should take advantage of turning their written projects in early.
