The Age of Jackson
After the War of 1812, the Federalist Party all but ceased to exist leaving only the Democratic-Republicans. However, after the Election of 1824, the country split on their support of for the two candidates running for president. Supporters of John Quincy Adams formed the National Republicans while the supporters of Andrew Jackson formed the Democratic Party. In the bitter Election of 1828, Jackson easily took the presidency. Jackson's presidency was marked with quarrels and controversy, but he remained a popular president throughout his two terms. Jackson would be the last strong president until 1860, when Abraham Lincoln became the first Republican president.
